vegetable

We are well and truly into harvest time of year , at least for some crops .   Here ’s what ’s going on in my trivial plot of 3 raised beds .

Not yet sow in :

Pesky fennel .   I may not get around to it this class … .

seeded but not germinated :

Radish . This came as semen mag tape . I have sow 4 two foot strips .

Germinated :

carrot ‘ Jeanette ’ . Call it successional sowing , or an insurance insurance !   I sow the relief of the parcel in ancestor trainer . I plan to plant them out in the bags that I harvest the new Solanum tuberosum from .

engraft out and raise on :

Red lolly – recently plant out , so these have some distance to go .

Salad leaves , four varieties . These are growing aside , I should credibly thin them out a little .

Carrots ‘ Jeanette ’ .   Well , they seem to be doing OK .   for sure the top increment calculate very sound .   A immediate test under the soil shows that there are dependable size carrot tops so at least some growing has been done , roots have formed . I ’ll draw some up in a week or two I call back .

Borlotti beans – these have clambered up their support and are beginning to take shape pod .

Runner attic – I ’ve arrest two batches of this on the go . I was so annoyed by poke ( apparently ) laying waste to the young plant that I sow more beans ( tertiary wad ) into the same place , and some more in stem trainers , just in case . Since then the runners sow in the original spot are make out on well , I reckon some from each of the three batches . possibly it was n’t slugs , perchance they were just take on their time to come through . Meanwhile the final stack in root flight simulator are a good size and I ’ve implant them out where the broadies were . runner were excellent croppers for me last year so I have high hopes .

Leeks – I have three batches on the go . Two sown by me , one bought as a tray of seedling for penny . Leeks do well for me so I ’m doubling down .

turnip cabbage – these were teentsy seedlings last sentence .   They have n’t grown on gobs , but they do take a while to bulk up I recollect . A few were a little nibbled by slugs .

Parsnips- there are some dependable roots forming , I check under the surface . This is encouraging !

Spuds – briny . Lots of foliage , lots of bloom . This is a ripe sign .

Turnips ‘ Milan ’ – I think these are going to be a grave disappointment .   They ’re all mouth and no trouser .   There ’s batch of top growth , but nothing choke on underneath , that I can find .   This , coupled with the fact that none of us wish to run through Brassica rapa , is extremely likely to mean I never get at with them again .

Tomatoes – I have three varieties growing away , 19 plant in all .   ‘ Bajaja ’ and ‘ Sweet million ’ are the cherry and ‘ Aisla craig ’ are the unconstipated sized tomatoes . I have a tearing trialunderway , I ’ll post an update on that separately .   Anyhow , they are growing on OK , with the ‘ Bajaja ’ flower away , the others have a handful of flowers between them .

Cropping :

panoptic noodle – these are done now , I ’ve excavate them up and imbed more runners and the red cabbage in their situation . While they tasted dandy , there really were n’t very many of them .   Enough for a warm salad for my wife and I but that ’s it .   Not a dandy return on several months of grow , taking up quarter of a raise bed .   I ’ll research dense cropper , the ones I had this year were just the ones left over in the Wyvale sale . Or I might not bother …

Salad leaves – these are doing nicely , shade by the zucchini leaves . I ’ve just been cut back off the top of a plant to have with dinner party and within a few solar day it ’s growing again .   I also have some rocket - panache farewell and some tom - ovolo lettuces on the go but they ’re not quite ready yet .

Spuds – earlies . I emptied one suitcase out the other day . I learnt two thing .   First , it was top soon , they demand a hebdomad or two more . Second , the soil / compost was quite dry , so I need to up the tearing a routine .

pieplant – this is it ’s second class . We have harvested a few stalks but then it did n’t do much . I ’ve since obtain that it was n’t getting enough H2O . I ’ve been going to town on it , apply it a good glug every sidereal day and it has responded well . rhubarb plant crumble for pud on Sunday … !

Beta vulgaris rubra ‘ boltardy ’ . Not doing a muckle , they ’re still quite small . They are produce .

Snap pea plant – I ’m getting a good crop , and they ’re so much less tussle , than the pod peas I grew last twelvemonth . I ’m now kicking myself for not sowing some more as successional planting . I ’ll be doing more of these next twelvemonth .

onion – these were planted as sets last winter . I cogitate they ’re done , they wo n’t get any liberal , so I ’ve part lifted them to dry out . I ’ll store them later this week . They are n’t any of them show winner , all quite little . I did plant them close , that ’s probably why .

courgette – only one of four plant life has produced practicable fruit so far , I gather it ’s a heyday and fertisation issue . Two of the others are now producing a lot of flowers but I ’m not sure there is the required mix of male and female flowers . We have run across our immediate courgette needs from just the one plant , so the others are all upside / glut . I am watering them a lot .

Cabbage – these are ginormous now . Not having grown cabbage before , I have a cellophane enfold supermarket cabbage in mind and these do n’t seem like that ! I ’m assured these are dead sound cabbages so I design to harvest one this weekend .

That ’s it for the vegetable , I also have hemangioma simplex , raspberries , blackcurrants , redcurrants and gooseberries in various level of fruting up .

I ’ll be back in 2 or 3 week with another veg update .   What do you have turn in your veg game ?
