No dahlia should be cut that is not to the full senesce . Young blooms that are not fully mature commonly will not last as long as the older blooms if placed together under the same condition . The stem should be cut as long as possible .
Cut the blooms in the early sunup or in recent evening when they are fresh , as they usually wilt during the center of the sidereal day . The cut should be made with a very acute legal document to prevent crush the stem .

First and first of all , never , never issue Dahlia pinnata in the hot sunshine . I mature dahlias to trade . Two years ago I noticed that the shorter the root , the longer the bloom kept in water ; then I began to experiment .
Out of it all I found that if you take a sharp pointed knife and puncture the root word to about 3 inches of the flower and immerse in urine for several hours before using , they will keep longer .
For this I practice a large oval cooking pan and lay the Dahlia pinnata flat leave only the flower out of piss . Then place it in a dark , cool place for at least three hours .
Also they should be cut when on the dry side – never water just before cutting – and before the sunshine is up or after sunset . If cut with very scant or no stem and blow in a bowl , they will keep much longer . D Lancaster , California
