My protagonist Farah was able to get me a single canistel source last year after Imet her at the Rare Fruit and Vegetable Council of Broward County .

I planted it immediately when I have home , then nothing happened for a couple of month .

finally , I decided to dig it up to see if the source was rotten … and lo and behold , there was a long root on it , which I partly fail in my digging !

I cautiously re - buried the seed and prayed it would live , kicking myself for my impatience . A month or so subsequently , a sprout come forth and a tree diagram go to grow .

A few months later , when we moved to our land , I planted the tree over the soundbox of my children ’s deceased pet coney :

And now , it ’s really starting to grow and put on new leaves :

Canistel is a terrific fruit with a singular and rich tone .

AsJulia Morton indite :

“ The fact that the canistel is not crisp and juicy like so many other fruit seems to dismay many who sample it casually . Some take to it at once . During World War II when RAF pilots and crewman were under breeding in the Bahamas , they showed keen fondness for the Pouteria campechiana nervosa and buy all they could , find in the Nassau market .

Some Floridians enjoy the fruit with salt , pepper and caustic lime or maize juice or mayonnaise , either fresh or after calorie-free bake . The pureed flesh may be used in custards or added to methamphetamine pick intermixture just before freeze . A rich shake , or “ eggfruit nog ” , is made by flux right canistel pulp , milk , sugar , vanilla extract , nutmeg or other seasoning in an galvanizing liquidiser .

The former Mrs. Phyllis Storey of Homestead made brilliant ‘ mock - pumpkin ” pie with 1 1/2 cups squelch eggfruit pulp magazine , 2/3 cup brown lettuce , 1/2 teaspoon common salt , 1/4 teaspoonful nutmeg , 1 teaspoonful calcium hydrate juice , 2 beaten testis , 2 cup vaporize milk or light cream . The mix is poured into one impudence and baked for 1 60 minutes at 250º F ( 121º C ) .

Others have prepared canistel pancakes , cupcakes , jam , and marmalade . Mrs. Gladys Wilbur made canistel “ butter ” by beating the ripe pulp in an electric blender , impart sugar , and cooking to a paste , with or without lemon juice . She used it as a spread on toast . The yield could also be dehydrated and thin out to a nutritious powder as is being done with the lucmo ( q.v . ) and this might well have commercial-grade usage in pud mixes . ”

I have another Pouteria campechiana nervosa growing at my parents ’ theater in Ft . Lauderdale ; however , it has grown lento and has not borne fruit after 8 years of growth . I believe this is due to poor grease and intermittent lachrymation . It ’s also surrounded by grass , which concentrate the resources available to the root .

I need to weed and mulch around my slight tree to keep it happy . It ’s already get plentifulness of water and fertilizer by being near the gardens . I planted it close so we ’d keep an eye on it . So far as I have a go at it , it ’s the only tree for land mile .
