We are now over half way through the meteoric winter and the dark is pull away a small at both ends of the twenty-four hour period , every twenty-four hour period . Downhill till bounce !   permit ’s not guess too much about the fact that February is often very wintry indeed . Regardless of the weather , it is time for Six on Saturday . 1 – Extra ail . In an all too intimate burst of excessive enthusiasm I bought more seed garlic bulb back in the Autumn than I have space for . After planting out 32 cloves into the allocated space in the veg secret plan , I still had over 20 cloves left . What to do ? Rather than compost them , I put six inches of compost into some empty bags and planted 4 or 5 cloves in each one . They are growing away jubilantly enough , the farewell are beginning to poke through .

– Spent hop . One of the down - side of the no - shaft coming to the veg plot of ground is the need for a dense mulch of compost once a year . In the past times I have n’t produced enough of my own compost to meet these needs . I mainly mulched with well - rotted manure this time around . I have read elsewhere about using spend hops as a compost constituent , and some have even used them cracking as amulchMy local brewery was happy for me to collect as much as I could take away . The photos are at the brewery , I carted forth 5 sacks .   I ’m just going to add to my compost bins . It behaves the same way as grass cutting in the heap , so need ‘ brown ’ material adding . I ’ll add newspaper and cardboard promotion , tear into strips . The brewery usually has a cache , so I ’ll be capable to collect a few bag whenever I want . Hopefully I ’ll have enough of my own compost to mulch the whole veg plot too soon next wintertime .   A word of precaution , watch out if you have dogs – spent record hop is toxic to hot dog and can be fatal .

– Clean greenhouse . Last weekend I took the plunge and spend a pair of time of day clearing out the nursery and deep - cleaning it . I cheated a bit , using the pressure level washing machine to get the worst of the grime off , inside and out . The interior was scrubbed with a bleach solution , paying finical attention to the corners , edges and material body , then the whole portion rinse down again with the jet - wash . This always feel like it will be a burdensome task but actually was not too onerous once I got going .

– Sweet pea plant . presently occupying a minuscule cold - frame I built last weekend . I have n’t grown sweet pea much before , but this year I am commit some plot space and growing several multifariousness . They see okay to me , I ’ll plant them out in a yoke of months .

– come forth tulip . At least , I amfairlysure these are tulips . They were in terrace mountain last year and have spent the step in sentence hunker in these formative bay window . I was n’t certain if they would add up back again , but clearly they are , so now I ’ll have to happen somewhere to put them . Nice job to have .

– semen in pots . There ’s not an awful hatful going on in my garden at this fourth dimension of yr , but I am already several seed varieties into my yearly seed sowing fury . In this lot are chili , one speculative tomato kind , and the others are mostly audacious perennials . At the front , you may just about see some old maid seedlings go forth . It ’s a fleck too soon for annuals , but sod it . This is the advance guard , in a couple of week they ’ll have lots of friends .
