Sarah’s fly-by-the-seat-of-her-pants garden in Minnesota

Today ’s photos are from Sarah Brackney . She says,“I garden in arctic USDA Hardiness Zone 4b in St. Paul , Minnesota . I ’m very unexampled to recurrent gardening , having only two years under my belt .

The garden on our property was unkempt and overgrown when my husband and I actuate in , so I spent much of my first season ripping out everything in sight ! I literally needed to start with a sportsmanlike slate … because I did n’t really know what I was doing – and I still do n’t ! 🙂 The most interesting matter about my garden is that I ’m completely constitutional and mulch free . I do n’t know if this will change in the future , but it seems to be form out very well for me now . My secret is a flock of well rot manure !

I have 5 different garden that are all a work in progress , and a soon - to - be 6th when we set up a patio at the back of our home ( with a nighttime garden around it ) . My gardens are far from perfect , but they ’ve teach me so much and given me the opportunity to connect with other multitude in the gardening residential area .

I really enjoy documenting my garden ( and the different plant ) and I go for that my garden photography exalt others to grow something … or to design interesting plant combinations .

I ’m definitely a fly - by - the - tush - of - my - gasp gardener , rarely planning anything . I rely heavily on what I ’m “ soak up to ” and the specific colour schemes I ’ve established for each area . I believe repetition is fundamental to obtaining a cohesive and pleasing garden and I am really cheer by English and Swedish horticulture styles .

Minnesota ’s climate is abominable , so I turn sturdy plants like iris , salvia , artemisia , genus Allium , clematis , achillea , and my favorite , Russian sage . This year is my first year with poppies ( Oriental and Shirely ) and I ’ve rule a new compulsion ! ( Dahlias arrive in a close second ! ) I maintain a pictural blog about our gardensHERE . ”

WOW , Sarah . I can not think you ’ve only been gardening for two years ! ! Incredible !
