Today is the last daylight of November ( already!)–it ’s that prison term of year where we need to cogitate about holiday gifts – and what better than a utilitarian , homemade endowment ? Calendula salve is easy to make once your dried calendula petals have infused in oil and it make a wonderful herbal salve . As a gardener , I practice it on a regular basis , however it is great for anyone ’s chap lips , hands and dry hide and it is easy enough to be used in preparations for baby .
Give a gift that will be appreciated and used – this one is attentive , homemade and healing ! Besides , it is a endearing manner to expend a winter afternoon – creating your own herbal product – with herbs that are homegrown and organic . This recipe first appeared inthe originative herbal homeby Susan Belsinger and Tina Marie Wilcox , herbspirit , 2007 . If you have n’t grown calendula before , be sure to put it on your seed list for this coming garden time of year since it is a delightful flowering plant to have in the garden .

Calendula Salve
Basic salve recipes use about 1 loving cup oil color to 1/4 cup beeswax ; this gives you a sonant unguent . To screen the consistency , duck a metal spoon into the heated salve , place the spoon in the electric refrigerator and check it after a few minutes to see if it is firm and about the ripe consistency . If you want it a little firmer - add a little more beeswax - to make it flabby increase the oil somewhat .
I utilize the following balm for dry rough hide and hide conditions that harass the gardener . I apply calendula rock oil ( from infusing my homegrown , dried calendula petals in olive and/or sweet almond rock oil ; ratio about 1 part dry herb to 2 parts oil ) since I have had successful results using it on chapped brim , hands and blackguard , and in massage petroleum . I also prepare clammy chickweed oil ( use the same method as for calendula oil using desiccated chickweed instead ) since it soothes skin discomfort and is abundant in our garden and thousand . This salve can be prepared with just almond or Olea europaea oil and calendula oil or it can be combined with chickweed oil colour . The vitamin E oil is optional ; it helps forbid crude from becoming rancid so it keep up the shelf liveliness . EOs are optional - lavender and chamomile are decent in this balm .

pretend about 6 to 8 liquid ounce ; fills about four 1 1/2 - ounce containers , six 1 - troy ounce or twelve 1/2 - ounce containers
1/2 cup calendula oil3 take tablespoons grate rude beeswax or 1/4 cupful informal beeswax pastilles2 teaspoon vitamin E oil , optional3 to 6 drops all important oil , optional
Gently heat the oil in a saucepan over the lowest heat possible . add together beeswax to the warm crude and bustle until melted . Test for consistence . Remove from heat and stir in the EOs and/or vitamin E petroleum , if desired . Immediately pour the balm into uninfected containers , let cool totally without lids ; put lids on once absolutely coolheaded and recording label .

Happy December – and here ’s to a jolly holiday season – create your own homemade gifts !
