I was take in to visit ASML , the take technology company that many of us have never hear of . The entire visit can be summarized in one word : sorcerous !
They spring up and ramp up the human race ’s most complicated machines ( they claim to be 1000 time more complex than the Space Shuttle ! ) , which publish the design on the silicon layer of microchips . Without ASML , today ’s global mass production of micro chip would not be possible . Without chips , we can almost do nothing now ; they are at the brain of all electronic machine we use .
ASML operates at the lowly nano or even pico stratum – yet their numbers are tremendous . Twenty thousand people influence at their home base in Europe ’s top tech hub ( Brainport Eindhoven ) . Worldwide , they have 40,000 employees , with 145 nationalities . Their sales in 2022 were € 22 billion ( 14 % growth ) , with a net net of € 5.6 billion ( 25 % of gross revenue ) . In 10 years , they expect to double in turnover .
I come up quite some similarity between ASML , Takii ( breeding party ) and our gamey - technical school gardening . Our foreign mission is interchangeable : to contribute to a better humans . Our work is comparatively strange to consumers , while its grandness to company is tremendous . The R&D spending is huge : at ASML 15 % of one-year sale , at breed companies , between 15 and 30 % . And in both sectors , right technological people are scarce . Recruitment is unmanageable . young employee total from all over the populace , are parent , and are largely educated and trained internally .
During the visit , I recognize how little I really live about the technology behind many applications . The human brain is too limited to understand this all . luckily , there are smart technologist – with a high arcdegree of specialization . ASML ’s machines puzzle out perfectly , are unequaled , and seem impossible to copy . There is something magical about this success . There is no one who know just how the machine as a whole works . It is the sum of thousands of interconnected portion . The human capital thus demonstrate invaluable : the enormous expertness and the ability to mold together as a team . Again , I see the similarity to our high - tech craw improvement stage business .
All this is excogitate in ASML ’s magnetic core value : challenge , coaction , and attention . With a continuous quest for foresightful - term value creation – and the conviction that matter can be done or done good – and thus the work is never finished . How applicable is this to our charming gardening and the great challenge we too cheek ?
