The cactus here isEchinocereusreichenbachiisubsp.perbellus(Zones 4–8 ) , which rest next to the lustrous yellow flowers ofDelosperma‘Reznicek ’ ( zone 5–8 ) . Many cactus and other succulents are quitewinter hardyprovided they have enceinte drainage during the wintertime .

Pediocactus simpsonii(Zones 4–7 ) has beautiful pinkish flowers in the spring .
Eriogonum‘Kannah Creek ’ ( Zones 3–8 ) is one of the Fagopyrum esculentum , with bright chicken flowers .
The hulk flower stem ofSilphiumlaciniatum(Zones 3–8 ) rise above the Iowa prairie .

Salviagreggiiand crossbreed ( such asSalviagreggii×lycioides‘Ultra Violet ’ , project ) are often grown asannuals , but this one is stout to zone 6–9 or possibly colder with good winter drainage .
Gladiolusbyzantinus(Zones 5–9 ) is one of the European species of gladiolus that are much hardier than the usual hybrids of the African coinage . Here it is endorse up by the profuse flowers ofNepeta‘Purrsian Blue ’ ( Zones 3–8 ) .
Echinocereusviridiflorusis another hardy cactus , develop up to Zone 4 with good drainage .

AYuccahybrid
Cardoon ( Cynaracadrunculus , Zones 6–9 ) is a congeneric of theartichokewith beautifulsilvery leaf .
You might not think offigs(Ficuscarica ) as thriving in Zone 5 in Iowa , but Kyle has found that several varieties ( ‘ Violette de Bordeaux ’ , ‘ short Miss Figgy ’ , and ‘ Hardy Chicago ’ ) do quite well for him without any specialwinter shelter .
