We ’ve ooohed and aaaahed over Jan Meissner ’s garden in Ohio several times ( refresh your memoryHERE , HERE , here , here , & here ) , but today we ’re getting a coup d’oeil of her 2nd , very different garden in Florida .

Jan says,“My Tampa , Florida , garden is 3 long time young , and a work in progress . The abode do with a canonical landscape package : an 8×10 concrete slab patio , a railyard full of cruddy grass , and three poove palms in the backyard . Every third home in the vicinity had the selfsame landscape design .

“ In the front curtilage , we continue the Washingtonian robusta laurel wreath and I added a small seating area and blossom seam , including a citrus tree . I prefer for a little kumquat tree . The orangish kumquats decorate the tree diagram for Halloween like a hundred little pumpkins . In the winter months ( when I tend to be there ) the front yard stays ardent enough in the sunshine so that even when temperature are in the 50 ’s I can relax outside in a tonne - shirt . There ’s also a gardenia in front of the fencing . I cut the flowers and put them everywhere , indoors and out .

“ I designed the back garden for privacy in suburbia . I wanted to be able to see the water beneath the ligustrum shrubs , but block the houses . Both sides of the terrace have a treillage address in Carolina Jasmine which flower jaundiced in February . My favorite tree diagram behind the jasmine are Japanese Blueberry . If I can beat the raccoons to it , I eat the yield which look like an Olea europaea but tastes like a sweet avocado . Behind the treillage on the opposite side of the patio are three clumping bamboos and a holly Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree . I use foliage colour for pursuit and loropetelum is a solid performer . It ’s prettier than my northerly ruby pigmy barberry but without the thorn and a incentive of dark pink flowers .

“ bush rosebush fill the spaces that I would employ for annuals , but being an absentee nurseryman I have bother observe up with fresh annuals . Variegated flax is perfect for a soft green to counterpoint against all the thick grim green glossy leaves . A appointment medallion stands between the two large ligustrums . The decoration with foresightful flowing fronds are the queen palms which were moved from their original spots to jibe into the Modern design .

“ Where I lack foliage for privateness , I endeavor to deflect your eye with garden ornament . With the ontogeny rate of plant life here , soon enough you wo n’t see the neighbour or my ornament . The garden statue is from Haiti and is about 30 year onetime . It descend with my father - in - natural law when we move him to Florida from California . It is flanked by the red leaves of genus Cordyline .

“ If someone notices the little toad in the resort hotel in the overhead shot , do n’t occupy . He was rescue . And I also keep a small machine called a batrachian - access the health spa now so any bunny girl or frog who fall in can climb out on their own .

“ Also notice no screen lanai . I want my plant life pollinate and when we are there we do n’t have too much fuss with insects . The fan chases most of them away . It ’s been a pleasure to use birdie - of - Eden as a perennial instead of an annual . The dame - of - heaven in the puritanical pot is a elephantine white one . It ’s in the passel to control it ’s size but I suspect it will be bursting out the sens soon enough .

“ It was tonic to use tonic whitened and risque in this environment . So face-to-face from my northerly garden . I ’m looking frontward to going back in a week because the widow’s weeds grow quicker than everything . ”
