A garden heavy on hydrangeas is having a standout year
well-chosen Monday GPODers !
Today we ’re in the garden of a frequent Garden Photo of the Day contributor , Carla Zambelli Mudry from Malvern , Pennsylvania ( here are just a handful of Carla ’s past submissions to check out : Celebrating Spring With Carla , A Perfect Combination : Daylilies and Hydrangeas , July in Carla ’s Garden , andCarla ’s Garden Tour ) . This time , we ’re get a peak at Carla ’s impressive hydrangea ingathering :
And just like that , hydrangea season has revert in all its glory , almost rivaling the initial outpouring of roses which immediately preceded the hydrangeas initiative . This garden is definitely very grueling on hydrangea , and that ’s 100 % on intention , because I fell in love life with them in gardens in the Hamptons of New York . They are a astonishingly tough shrub , and when I gain that one summer while visiting my babe , I just imagine it was so beautiful that I want that feel in my garden as well .

I have so many different sort of hydrangea , including Nipponese and Korean spate hydrangeas that I have lose count . I just have it off them , and I also have them as anchors in tumid pots that come back after the winter no trouble . Not all of the hydrangea are open yet , and the deer and I had words this week when they ate some of theLimelight(Hydrangea paniculata‘Limelight ’ , Zones 4–8)blooms . well-chosen Gardening !
The colouration of bigleaf and mountain hydrangea can vary greatly , depending on the makeup of the soil they are planted in . To hear more about that , check out this article that cover some common hydrangea color misconception : How to Change Hydrangea Color : pH Is n’t the Only Factor . As Carla sent over several gorgeous blue blooms , I can only assume she has acidic soil with plenty of aluminum for those vibrant disconsolate shades .
One of those unbelievable mountain hydrangeas Carla was utter about , skylark another incredible blue hue .

And Carla still do by us to some striking combinations . The blue bigleaf in the scope is a perfect cooperator to this motley crimson twig cornel ( Cornusalba‘Elegantissima ’ , Zones 2–8 ) .
And from the other slant , variegated carmine branchlet dogwood is the sodding background for those beautiful drab blooms !
Close up of that grim smasher just glow in the Lord’s Day . Carla ’s hydrangea compendium could well fool me into thinkingblueisn’t one of the harder colors to hail by in the world of plants .

A pinkish mountain variety that search to be giving the tell - taradiddle polarity that it is slowly shift to blue rosiness .
But pinkish and blue are n’t the only wonder in the world of hydrangea ! Several subtlety of purpleness are also heavenly , including this particularly vibrant miscellanea .
And white is seriously sublime as well — especially when paired with a gorgeous , vauntingly - leave behind hosta and a bustle of ferns . White bigleaf and mountain salmagundi will never change to pink or blueish , they lack any pigment at all and will always stay that definitive white .

Lastly , a variety so distinct I finally feel positive give it an ID . With its iconic bloom and leafage coloration , it can be no other than ‘ Miss Saori ’ bigleaf hydrangea ( Hydrangea macrophylla‘Miss Saori ’ , Zones 5–9 ) .
Thank you for sharing your collection , Carla ! Always a delicacy to get an update from your garden .
