Looking back at the best of last year

I ’m Sue Webel , and I garden in North Canton , Connecticut , Zone 6a . I antecedently relegate some characterisation of my relatively fresh garden in September 2020 ( Making a New Garden in Connecticut ) .

Since then I ’ve continued to develop the garden . In October 2020 we hired an excavating contractor to percipient rostrum and brush from about an 8th of an Akka in the back garden and move some of the stone “ stock ” into formation to form the base of an loose pit wall . A good portion of my 2021 garden time was spent developing , preparation , and establish that area . A DIY firepit project locate smack in the middle took longer than anticipated and force me to extend the garden portion of the project into 2022 and no dubiety beyond . But we all know how that goes .

Here are some highlights of my 2021 garden .

May in the front garden featuresCornusmas‘Variegata ’ ( zona 4–8),Euphorbiapolychroma(Zones 4–8),Phloxglaberrima‘Triple caper ’ ( zone 3–8 ) , andFilipendulaaurea(Zones 3–8 ) . With the exception of theCornus mas , this garden was newly institute in spring 2020 after a walk replacement .

Here is another department of the front garden in May . TheSpirea‘Ogon ’ ( Zones 4–8 ) is just past bloom and creates the perfect foliage foil with one of my favorite perennials , Ligularia‘Britt Marie Crawford ’ ( Zones 4–8 ) . By some stroke of luck , I managed to catch the momentary flowers ofCamassia(Zones 4–8 ) blooming in conjunction with anAmsonia(Zones 5–8 ) .

Paeonia‘Bartzella ’ ( zone 4–9),Cercis‘Ruby Falls ’ ( zone 5–9 ) , and a variegatedWeigela(Zones 4–8 ) assault out this vignette from June . When I started the garden , this area was to a great extent wooded . Everything was removed except theWeigela , which I now apply as a quotation point for where the edge of the woods used to be .

In July I happened across this happy smother ofCephalanthus‘Sugar Shack ’ ( zona 4–10 ) andSanguisorba‘Dali Marble ’ ( Zones 2–9 ) with a peep ofMiscanthus‘Morning Light’(Zones 5–9 ) in the back . After two drouth years in a dustup , 2021 brought plentiful rain , which made theCephalanthusvery felicitous .

The abundance of July in one of my Old back garden

I decided if I ’m hold up to grow daylilies(Hemerocallishybrids , Zones 4–9 ) , I ’m going to focus on later on - blooming mixed bag and/or partner them to complement other plant that are not daylilies . ‘ Peconic Autumn ’ is a adorable cultivar that flower from former July through August here . The hydrangea isHydrangea paniculata‘Vanilla Strawberry ’ ( Zones 3–8 ) . The variegate shrub isHibiscussyriacus‘Purpureus Variegatus ’ ( zone 5–8 ) , which is a bit of an oddball . The dark ruby flower buds swell but never to the full clear .

In September , tropicalabundance top on the patio . I grow lots of attendant plants incontainersand in the ground . Many come inside before frost and get stored dormant in the cellar or are produce as houseplants until they can escape back to the garden in May . TheTetrapanax(Zones 7–10 ) determine in back ofBrugmansia‘Charles Grimaldi ’ ( zona 8–10 ) has been hardy in the dry land in this protect spot .

I captured this shot of one of my cats relish the garden on a dazed morning in mid - October . May come always be this kind to my garden .

By November , hard frosts have usually reduced the garden , especially the tender annuals , to treacle , yet here we get this peep at our novel firepit surface area through a largeSalviaelegans‘Golden Delicious ’ ( Zones 8–10 or as an yearly ) on November 2 .
