Farm Fresh: Keepin’ It Local!

Yolanda Nagy loves good food . And she knows where to receive it : at husbandman ’ market and farm stands . To introduce us to Central Texas Fannie Merritt Farmer , ranchers , and food artisans , she hits the road six days a week as@eatin_and_sippin_locallyto show us when and where to detect them , gratuity for shopping , and formula to make back home . Via Zoom , Yolanda explicate what prompt her to waltz across Texas to tantalize our taste buds and quest for new adventures ( these days especially!).Raised in Detroit , she grew up going to farmers ’ marketplace every weekend with her family . “ It was really exciting to get back into it here in Texas and look around and talking to the vendors . They ’ve just vex such great story to divvy up . And so , I imagine , you recognise , I could really give them a voice , ” she read . Across Central Texas , we can line up a James Leonard Farmer ’ market or farm stand any day of the hebdomad except Monday . To keep us in the know about days and hour for each location , Yolanda travel the main road and byroad for our own fresh solid food forays . We can meet the intemperately - working manufacturer , get their growing tip for our garden , and fill our baskets with in - season food , include kind that we may not feel in stock , like succulent heirloom tomatoes in early summer . It ’s a probability to judge raw thing , too , and vendors are well-chosen to share recipes . For Yolanda , one was Asiatic long noodle grown byBernhardts Fruit and Veggie Farmon a trip to theTexas Farmers ’ marketplace . They advised her to simply sauté these flavorful beans . “ I like to experiment , but I only experiment through my TV because I love to consume but I do not cook . So , I bonk having my hubby , who is a enceinte chef , create these peachy dishes . And he did a very uncomplicated knockout with the long beans ; he just sliced them up and then saute them . ”Watch their quick Instagram reel!(I made them for dinner , so yummy that I ’ll be doing it again!)“Now there ’s a departure between Farmer ’ grocery store and farm stands which I learned on my visit with Carol Ann atBoggy Creek Farmstand , ” Yolanda mark . “The difference between the two is that a Farmer ’ grocery is share with many vender where you ’ll discover 30 to about a hundred vendors in one slur . The farm viewpoint is in a small intimate place , commonly on a farm or near a farm and most of the vegetable , almost all of the vegetables , are sowed from their farm . ”It ’s always fun to lead to Boggy Creek Farm and see Carol Ann Sayle ! In 1992 , she and hubby Larry Butler became the steward of this urban regenerative farm on Austin ’s east side . Like so many , I was heartbroken when Larry died in 2018 . He and Carol Ann , frequent darling guests on CTG , always greet me with warmth and more planting advice when I went buy at on Saturday morn . Carol Ann gave me a few more tips on my recent visits!I call back Larry saying that the good way to eat a tomato still warm from the field was to just chomp in over the kitchen sink!On a Wednesday , Yolanda encounter up with me and Austin PBS , KLRU - TV co-worker Robert Moorhead and Alex Wolff at Boggy Creek to check out that dawn ’s harvests . ( Boggy Creek ’s unresolved 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday - Saturday.)I picked up tenacious dome to try out the Instagram recipe and more pleasant-tasting Jimmy Nardello peppers that I added to my sauté . I ’ve made two slip now for them , because their slightly sweet flavor act beautifully in salads , eggs , and stir Roger Eliot Fry . Next prison term , I ’ll get sorrel , fresh dandelion , and kale!By the way of life , here ’s adelicious dandelion recipethat Alex Wolff share with CTG a few years ago — a family custom pass down by his grandmother and document for us by his mama , Lisa Wolff . Yolanda preps us with must - take item when you manoeuver out : a ice chest with frozen water bottles , bagful for teetotal goods , and insulated bag for core and dairy farm . “The market place is a station that you go and just explore and you spend a day , it ’s not like the store , you ’re not run in and running out . And I think that is the coolest matter when you may meet the God Almighty , who ’ve created what you ’re about to buy . You just do n’t find that in a memory , ” she said . “I’ve finally found my passion , my ecological niche , and giving a voice to the vendors is just what I freaking love to do . ”Watch her story now !

Thanks for stopping by ! See you next time , Linda
