Does biochar really work?
I ’ve asked that question and havebeenasked that question many times . But I never bothered giving biochar a real mental test . I fuddle some into my garden and some into my compost but never really made a lot , added a lot or pay any actual attention to the long term plus or subtraction .
Fortunately , I have friend that do conduct experiments … like Steven :
It ’s interesting that his lettuces die … and then in a subsequent yr , the leeks went around the bend .

Raw oxford grey / biochar does seem to have a damaging gist when first used as it sucks up the nutrition in the soil .
Later , however , it play as a soil reserve for those good things as well as in - ground condo ontogenesis for beneficial bacteria and fungus .
Biochar Plans
I design on produce a big batch of biochar and then soaking it inmy anaerobic compost teabefore adding it to some of my struggling garden beds .
Alternately , I ’ve heard you’re able to pluck biochar in urine to change by reversal it into a foresighted - term plant food . Or just employ water right in the garden , as I shew in yesterday ’s video :
Throwing biochar in a compost pile and then by and by applying the ruined compost to your garden throw your industrial plant both the benefits of biochar and the benefit of compost . This is a method acting I know many gardeners practice .

Simple Biochar Making
Though you could create special biochar kiln and really geek out about making biochar , I come near it more like I come near most composting and just dismount a big ardor , then let it burn a flake , rake it around , then water it out with the hosepipe and amass the charcoal grey .
Steven has a nice trench method acting for making biochar I would test if it was n’t so devilishly grueling to dig yap here because of the corpse and rocks :
Biochar , no matter how you make it , has hope as a long - term stain amendment . Steven ’s experiment is pushing me to test some experiments of my own . It ’s monsoon time of year right now so I have n’t gotten together enough dry woodwind to really make awing biochar , but one of these days it will be vindicated for a few days in a wrangle and I ’ll get to alight up a gracious fire .
Then it ’ll be fourth dimension to start some crazy biochar action in the garden . So , to answer the dubiousness “ does biochar really work , ” it seems the solvent is “ yes ” based on Steven ’s inquiry . More testing is in order , however , as these is a all-inclusive range of lotion amounts possible and majuscule differences in soil and crop .
Anyone else feel like induce a fire ? I ’m psyched .
