My little Lily of the Valley project really paid off . I simply dug some roots with bud just before the Holidays , and then planted the roots in flats and pots , which I rate in the greenhouse . As I mentioned before , I ’ve purchased beautiful roots for forcing ( pip , they are called ) from White Flower Farm and once from France . They performed well , but the ones that I dug from my garden actually performed even well . I will partake a a duet of secrets to successfully force Lily of the Valley .

First , toil your Lily of the Valley pips late in the year , well even to dig them during a thaw ( even now , if the reason is not frozen ) . This see to it that you will have fully vernalized plants . As anyone who grows Lily of the Valley eff , these plant run , and are practically invasive , so there is no fear in dig up as many as you need .

If you grind works in December , you’re able to pot them up directly into pot , and begin force in good order away . The roots are solid , and white , but you could cut back them , so that you could fit more of the vertical shoots in a pot . The goal here is to twitch as many shoots into a pot as possible , as only one flower straw will come along from each shoot ( if you are lucky ) . The small shoots most likely will not produce a flower .

The most rough-cut mistake people make in force Lily of the Valley , is keeping the works too nerveless . These are warm weather lovers , so place pots in a brilliant , warm place such as a sunny window that has no draft copy , or well yet , under lights , specially tiered ones as the light stand below the highest setting will see to it that the radical level of the potbelly will stay on warm during the day . When lights are turned off , the pot and thus , the antecedent , will cool importantly , and this temperature shift is key in ensure long theme , and minuscule bud drop . It was a thaumaturgy we used to employ when draw perennials for the New England Spring Flower Show .

Once skunk are in bloom they can be placed in a cooler localisation – I keep my flowerpot in a deep plant life window which stays near 50º F day and Nox . The odour is incredible , and it ’s an amazing aesthesis in the middle of January . I also gave a pot to the lady across the street who is 85 years old for her birthday – it was so sweet , she exclaim , as she live alone . In the greenhouse , which is still quite cold , I have many more flats expect to be squeeze as soon as these first toilet start out to wind down . As the winter progresses , these other pots keep cool , will force in less time .

Be certain to hear this next year ( or apprehend some up from your garden if you get a melt in the next few weeks ) and let me fuck how it went .
